What do you enjoy about living and working in Albury Wodonga?
When I’m not working or studying I enjoy riding my motorbike and this region is spectacular for riding. There are so many great mountains in the area - Beechworth, Bright, Falls Creek, Mount Hotham – it’s a really good environment for motorbikes.
What is your work background?
I’m originally from here and joined the Army when I was 16, to do a trade in carpentry. I then went on to Sydney and down to the South Coast of NSW. When I left the Army I did further study and gained my builders licence. I eventually wanted to move back home and I’ve now enrolled in TAFE doing a Diploma in Community Services, while working at Homemakers, mainly in the clearance centre or doing deliveries.
What do you enjoy about working at Homemakers?
First of all it’s a wonderful, flexible work environment. Russ and Kerrie have been more than happy to work in with my study arrangements. They understand the need to balance your personal life, and that respect is returned. I also enjoy meeting new people and learning new skills. I have a background in building, not sales, so it’s been a great challenge.
Do you have a personal philosophy you live by?
I’ve become a big believer in that you CAN teach an old dog, new tricks. After 23 years in the building industry I’m working at Homemakers and I’m also studying community service and hope to be involved in child protection or juvenile justice one day. Often we’re told when we get to a certain age we should stick to what we know, but you don’t have to. You’re never too old to chase a dream or a new challenge in life.
